Welcome to Union Elementary School’s MyPBIS Page

What is PBIS?
Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a program supported by the Arizona Department of Education to promote and maximize academic achievement and behavioral competence. At Union we call it Cougar Code Behavior, a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve important social, behavior and educational goals. We know that when exemplary behavior and stellar teaching come together, students will reach their maximum potential. The staff at Union Elementary are proud to be leading this initiative at our school.
As part of the Cougar Code program, we have established several clear expectations for the behavior we expect in all areas of our school – Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible. We will explicitly teach those expectations to the students and reward them frequently with positive praise and Cougar Code Tickets. During the first week of school students will tour the school learning all expectations and filling out their Cougar Code Passport. The expectations for all student behavior are clear throughout our campus, including areas such as: the playground, cafeteria, and classrooms. You will be able to ask your child, “What are the expectations in your school?” “How do you follow those expectations?” “What happens when a teacher or staff member sees you following the expectations?” Throughout the year, students will be rewarded for making positive choices through the continued use of our Cougar Code Tickets.
Our school expectations are also designed to prevent bullying behaviors while providing for a safe school environment; thus, allowing more time for instruction. We will apply consistent consequences and positive reinforcement for all kids. By detailing every expected behavior and teaching it to kids in a positive way, we will provide a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, front office staff and our paraprofessionals. All staff will be able to encourage students to follow the Cougar Code and make PAWSitive choices.
We believe that by guiding students to make positive behavior choices, creates a school community where all students have an environment where they can succeed and grow.

What are the Outcomes?
Decreased classroom disruptions and office discipline referrals
Increased academic achievement and student success
Improved school safety
Why is it Needed Here?
Our student discipline data shows that quite a few students were being sent to the office for disruption and disrespect. When that happens, they are not learning and this also interferes with the learning of others. We needed to help all our student to be successful academically and behaviorally.
When students struggle with reading – we teach. When students struggle with math or music – we teach. When students struggle with behavior – we need to teach them how to succeed.
Climate Surveys Data
Staff, students and parents agree that since introducing PBIS and our FJA Expectations, the climate and culture of the school has improved. Climate surveys are completed annually to help us measure our growth and improvement.
